The History of Gowen-Smith Chapel

The History of Gowen-Smith Chapel

Gowen-Smith Chapel is committed to the tradition of service established some 76 years ago by the late Glenn Gowen and Carl W. Smith. In the late 1930s,

Mr. George Haskell Gowen, along with Mr. Hoover established the Hoover-Gowen Funeral Home in Shelbyville. Glenn Gowen, following in his father's footsteps, continued the business at the North Main Street location under the name of Gowen Funeral Home.

In 1947, he was joined in the business by Carl W. Smith. The partnership continued until 1985 when the business was sold to Service Corporation International. Mr. Smith served as manager until 1990 and continued to serve as a consultant until 1998. In 2001, the business was purchased by Heritage Care, LLC and the operation continued. Throughout its 76 years of existence, this establishment has strived to meet the challenges and needs presented to a growing area. For several of the early years, Gowen-Smith Chapel provided funeral service, as well as ambulance service, from its original location on North Main Street in Shelbyville. In 1957, the firm moved to its present location at 850 Union Street, where the building has been remodeled and enlarged to better accommodate the growth and needs of the people in this area.
